Transportation Options to Patara

• Private Vehicle: Follow the Fethiye-Kaş road, pass Kalkan, and after approximately 11 km, you will see the "Patara" sign. Turn here and drive 6 more kilometers to reach the ancient city via Gelemiş Village.
• Minibus (Dolmuş): You can take the Patara minibuses departing from the Kaş or Kalkan bus stations. They will take you to the center of Gelemiş Village, and from there, it's a short walk to the entrance of the ruins.
• Bus: You can take intercity buses to the "Patara Junction" and then transfer to minibuses or taxis to reach the city.

History and Significance of Patara Ancient City

Patara, mentioned as "Patar" in Hittite texts from the 13th century BC, is one of the oldest and most important port cities in the region. Throughout history, it has been one of the six major cities of the Lycian League with three votes and has carried the title of the league's capital.

Its greatest significance lies in its place in political history. The assembly hall of the Lycian League, which Montesquieu referred to as "the most perfect republic in history," is located here. Additionally, Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus), a critical figure in Christian history, was born and raised in Patara. Over time, the city's harbor filled with silt from the Xanthos River (Eşen Creek), causing it to move away from the sea and lose its former grandeur.

Patara Assembly Building (Bouleuterion): Considered the oldest parliamentary building in the world, this structure was restored in 2010 to its former glory. It is known to be where representatives of the Lycian League gathered, laying the foundations of democracy. It is said to have inspired the U.S. Constitution.

• Patara Ancient Theater: Built against the Kurşunlu Hill, the theater has a capacity of around 6,000 people. The stage building and seating areas are well-preserved. From the upper steps of the theater, you can enjoy a unique view of the entire ancient city and the distant sand dunes.

• Patara Victory Arch (Metius Modestus Arch): This magnificent gate, which greets you at the entrance of the city, was built in honor of Roman Governor Metius Modestus in the 1st century AD. The three-arched structure also served as part of the water system bringing water to the city.

• Patara Lighthouse: Built by Roman Emperor Nero in 54 AD, this lighthouse is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the world. It has been largely restored.

• Entrance Fee: As of 2026, ticket prices have been updated, and the Museum Pass (MüzeKart) is the most economical option for all Turkish citizens. Foreign visitors are charged according to Euro-based rates.

  • Summer Season (April 1 - October 31): 08:30 – 20:00
  • Winter Season (November 1 - March 31): 08:30 – 17:30
  • Note: Ticket sales stop 30 minutes before the closing time.

After exploring the ancient city, the road leads you to the mesmerizing Patara Beach. This beach is not only for swimming but also a protected area where Caretta Caretta turtles have been nesting for millions of years. After 20:00, human entry to the beach is prohibited, as it is reserved for the turtles.
